‘I stayed in the town where Vincent van Gogh was born, and every day I visited nearby rivers, forests, and peatlands by bicycle. As a filmmaker, particularly working with 3D computer graphics, even when I witness beautiful rays of light in the forest at dusk, I cannot instantly capture that scene on canvas with the miraculous speed of a master. Of course, I record omnidirectionally with a 360-degree digital camera, but ultimately, it isn’t the footage itself that becomes my canvas; it is the virtual space’, aldus Shu Isaka.
‘In this space, which flows at a slightly different pace from real-world time, I am gradually creating a story about a new virtual megacity plan called “Den Zoomstad” (“The Edge City”), which will stretch from the zone around Zundert that Van Gogh walked around once and may remain as land more than 200 years from now, even after a 10-meter rise in sea levels. I also plan to exhibit mysterious tools and drawings in the real world, which correspond to the story created within this virtual environment, much like a digital twin. Whether these actions are a form of “expression” that strongly speaks to the present or a devout act of “recording” directed towards the future, I feel a certain affinity with artists who wander between these realms. As I recall the historical presence of the Netherlands that I sensed while in Japan, I was able to interact with it here during my first visit to the Netherlands, which made this a very peaceful yet exciting stay.’
