Sunflowers for Van Gogh

100 years ago, Jo van Gogh-Bonger sold Vincent van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers to the National Gallery in London. To mark the occasion, Van Gogh Brabant is organizing ‘The Year of the Sunflower’. Fields have been sown with the colorful yellow flowers at numerous locations and exhibitions are being held by contemporary artists who have been inspired by Vincent’s Sunflowers.

The Van GoghHuis is presenting works by Marc Mulders, Reinoud van Vught, Jorn van Leeuwen, Isabella Werkhoven, Jarik Jongman, Thijs Segers, Claudy Jongstra, Loek Grootjans, Erik Andriesse, Peter Kantelberg, Salvo, Chant van Lieshout, Esmee van Zeeventer, Danielle Hoogendoorn, Wouter van Riessen, Matijs van de Kerkhof, Rainer Fetting, Alberto Scodro, André Smits and KASBOEK. A painting by Isaac Israëls depicting Vincent’s painting is on display as a special loan. He borrowed it before it was sold to the National Gallery and used it as a background for his models.

Exhibitions on this theme are also taking place at other locations in Brabant. Stedelijk Museum Breda is showing works by Ruud van Empel and Karin Borghouts. Wouter van Riessen, Matijs van de Kerkhof, Sara van Vliet, Eva Krause and Margriet Smulders are exhibiting at the Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen.

For the occasion, Thijs Segers created a large mural of sunflowers on the Markt in Zundert.
