The Vincent van GoghHuis presents an exhibition of works by German artist Anselm Kiefer (1945) from 8 March to 9 June 2025. This exhibition about his journey in the footsteps of Van Gogh is in parallel to his exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
At the age of eighteen, Anselm Kiefer set out to travel in the path of Van Gogh. He arrived in Zundert in August 1963 and was kindly welcomed by the Mutsters family at a farm on the Moersebaan. Kiefer stayed there for a few days and drew portraits of the farmer and his wife. He described the stay extensively in his travel journal.
‘Now finally the farmers have agreed to pose for portrait sketches. They wanted to put it off until Sunday so they could be properly dressed. That’s no good. They wear urban clothes here on Sundays, and I’d like to paint real farmers (potato eaters).’ [Anselm Kiefer, Zundert 1963]
Kiefer’s interest in Van Gogh and his paintings has never ceased. Between 1992 and 2007, he worked and lived in Barjac, in the south of France, not too far from where Vincent painted his most famous works. At La Ribaute, his former studio-estate, which is now part of Eschaton Foundation, Kiefer grew giant Japanese sunflowers, which he photographed and incorporated into paintings, installations and artist’s books.
Anselm Kiefer’s works are presented for the first time alongside Van Gogh in the exhibition ‘Sag mir wo die Blumen sind’ at the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. The Van GoghHuis takes this opportunity to focus on Kiefer’s ‘Van Gogh Journey.’
In addition to the travel journal and various loans, drawings and paintings are included in this show. The documentary Anselm (2023) by Wim Wenders will also be shown.
